Baroque viols; how high and low can you go? The sound of a single bass viol is wonderful. The sound of two bass viols is fantastic. The sounds of three bass viols is awesome!

Our programme starts in France from the end of 17th century, with the rise in popularity of the violin and the pardessus de viole, with music by Corelli, and Hotteterre played on tiny viols. The violin shaped viol, the quinton, developed sometime after the opening in 1725 of the first French series of public concerts, the Concert Spirituel, in the spacious hall of the Palais des Tuileries, where it could project. We play Morel and Marais in a combination of quinton and bass viol with continuo, that could be heard in the Palace of Versailles; the viola da gamba marathon, the famous Sonnerie de Sainte Geneviève du Mont de Paris.

Finally, for three bass viols, we play Forqueray.
