Scipione received its premiere at the King’s Theatre in 1726. Performed over three acts, this magical opera is set in 210 BC and recounts the life and tales of the great Roman General, Scipio Africanus.
Christian Curnyn leads an all-star cast which features soprano Mhairi Lawson and 2020 International Handel Singing Competition audience prize winner Jessica Cale.

We are delighted to close the 2023 London Handel Festival with a concert performance of Handel’s rarely performed opera Scipione, in a new edition by Peter Jones.
