The Marian Consort

Light of the World

Sublime English vocal music from the turbulent 17th century combined with new music by Deborah Pritchard and John Woolrich.

The Marian Consort and Greta Mutlu (violin)
Light of the World
The Marian Consort explores sublime music from England's turbulent 17th century. Doleful works from the dying embers of the English Renaissance by Byrd and Tomkins are contrasted with the Italianate brilliance of the 'English Orpheus' Henry Purcell.

Interspersed with these are John Woolrich's settings of three texts by 18th century poet, Christopher Smart who was born at Fairlawne, Shipbourne - a stately home near to West Malling. Budding singers join the Marian Consort in a side-by-side performance of Purcell - "Remember not". Bookending the programme, are works of glowing luminosity by Deborah Pritchard including the world premiere of Heart of Light performed by violinist Greta Mutlu.
