Other Voices of Scottish Fiddle Music

Other Voices of Scottish Fiddle Music
In collaboration with the British Council and the Institut Français d’Écosse, we’re delighted to again host a satellite event for Harpsichord en Fête. This performance brings together musicians based in France and Scotland, exploring Scottish fiddle music written by female musicians. The period of the late 18th and early 19th centuries has rightly been described as the Golden Age of Scottish fiddle music, but music by women has largely remained unexplored, despite there being a relatively large amount of surviving material collected, arranged, composed, and even published by female musicians. This performance marks the beginning of a project bringing this repertoire to light, from beautiful airs to foot-stomping reels.

Morag Johnston & Aaron McGregor violin,

Alison McGillivray Cello,

Claude Meneux Harpsichord

The ensemble will perform on period instruments, including the university’s 1771 Kirkman harpsichord, an instrument which belonged to the Aberdeen Musical Society in the 18th century.
