The City Musick

Reining in the Donkey

Music from seventeenth century Rome

The City Musick, York University Choir
Reining in the Donkey
Featuring the exotic wind and brass instruments of The City Musick, this most unusual event presents multi-choir works from the 'Colossal Baroque' of seventeenth-century Rome: four-choir music by Benevoli, his Venetian teacher Ugolini and others. The music features a curious technique called 'reining in the donkey' in which lower parts move hastily underneath a static soprano line, supposedly like a priest sitting on and trying to hold back a frenetic donkey (think 'King of Kings' in the Halleluiah chorus).
