Rose Consort of Viols

Orlando Gibbons and his World

Orlando Gibbons and his World
Orlando Gibbons died suddenly and unexpectedly 400 years ago in 1625. He was then at the height of his powers, in the service of Charles I as virginalist in the privy chamber and organist of both the Chapel Royal and Westminster Abbey. Gibbons’ earlier publication of Madrigals and Mottets provided finely wrought vocal music that was equally ‘apt for Viols’, while his consort music is a treasure trove of pieces ranging from cheeky duets to sonorous In nomines, and fantasias in up to six parts.
