Endelienta Baroque
Suites Caroline
Restoration Suites: Blow, Locke, Purcell

programme showcases how instrumental incidental
music was a vital tool in enhancing the dramatic power of
Restoration stage works. Including a specially-compiled
suite of John Blow’s music for Venus and Adonis, the seminal
English masque with its roots in Ovid’s original tragedy, we
also hear music from Purcell’s Abdelazer suite (the Rondeau
from which was used by Benjamin Britten as the theme
for his set of variations in The Young Person’s Guide to the
Orchestra) and Matthew Locke’s dramatic music written for
a 1667 production of The Tempest.
