Gawain Glenton

In the Summertime...
Gawain who has been to Purbeck before with the English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble and with I Fagiolini, returns with In Echo, an ensemble of cornettos, violins, viola, violone and organ, to open the Festival with a celebration of summertime, featuring virtuosic 17th century German music and the ensemble’s own take on Pachelbel’s famous Canon in D.

Johann Sommer's punningly-titled 1623 collection of instrumental sonatas, Fröhliche Sommerzeit, is full of inventive writing for 2, 3 and 4 instruments. This concert shows off the playfulness and virtuosity of Sommer’s music, as well as contemporaries Scheidt and Vierdanck and Pachelbel.
